Special Programs Cornell students have many opportunities to study and work all over the world. The information below touches on a few key financial aid questions regarding these special programs. For additional financial aid information on any of the programs listed below, please email us. Students are also encouraged to meet with a financial aid counselor to review their specific situation in greater detail. It is especially important that you submit all application materials in a timely manner so that your award can be prepared as quickly as possible. Inform our office in writing of your plans, and to find out if any follow-up is required to disburse your aid to your account (such as signing a loan note). Make sure that the appropriate university offices have your correct address.
Cornell's study abroad program, Cornell Abroad, offers students, regardless of need, what may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pursue academic programs in locations around the world. To participate in one of the study abroad programs, contact the Cornell Abroad Office, 300 Caldwell Hall, and an academic advisor in your college. Check with your college to make sure you meet eligibility requirements. When Cornell Abroad has been notified of your acceptance, they will present us with a budget for your term abroad; this will include your costs for tuition, room and board, round trip travel, books, and miscellaneous expenses. If study abroad costs are higher than the cost of a term on campus at Cornell, your aid package will be reviewed to see if there is financial aid available to help meet the additional cost. Generally, if the study abroad costs are lower than the cost of a term on Cornell's campus, your aid package will be reduced by the difference in costs. Each student's situation is reviewed individually. Contact our office to discuss your specific situation. For the term abroad, work-study is typically replaced by loan. If you participate in the Engineering Co-op program, typically you spend the summer taking courses on campus. During the fall, you will be working for an employer on your co-op assignment, and return to campus during the spring semester. Since you will be attending summer session, the financial aid application must be submitted by March 1. This will allow our office time to process your aid eligibility before summer registration. If you’ve submitted your application on time, your financial aid review will be completed in early May. Award notifications are sent beginning in mid-May for those whose applications are complete. Your family contribution will be the same as if you were on the normal schedule. Your summer financial aid will be slightly less than the spring semester because of lower cost during the summer. Your Summer Savings Expectation (SSE) will still be included as part of the total family contribution for the summer and the spring semesters. Therefore, it is important to plan your financing accordingly. Be sure to save as much as possible from your Co-op job placement earnings. Your increase in income will generate an increase in your SSE for the next academic year. If, when you receive your financial aid notification for the next academic year, you find you are unable to meet your SSE, you may complete the Engineering Co-op Living Expense Worksheet along with the SSE Adjustment Application. Be sure to attach all required documentation with both forms. For more information about the program, please contact the Engineering Cooperative Education and Career Services Office at 201 Carpenter Hall.
