We understand that financial aid has its own language, and we have developed this glossary to assist you as you navigate this process.

Am I considered an international student?

  • Students who are not U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, and those who do not have refugee/asylee status, or who are not undocumented residents are considered international students.
  • U.S. undocumented residents are considered domestic students for financial aid purposes.
  • Applicants who have dual U.S.

The Federal Direct PLUS Loan for Parents of Undergraduate Students, or PLUS loan, offers reasonable, fixed interest rates, generous qualifying credit criteria, and flexible repayment plans. Credit approval is required, and you must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Unusual Circumstances

Most students entering Cornell are considered financially dependent on their parents. This means your parents must provide their financial information on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS Profile. However, Cornell recognizes that you may face challenging family circumstances and need to request reconsideration of your dependency status.

The Yellow Ribbon Application is for prospective students, without an active Cornell NetID. Enrolled students must complete the VA Benefits Request Form at the beginning of each academic year.
